Canadian politicians from across the political spectrum released statements congratulating the Tamil community on their achievements and thanking them for their contributions to Canadian life as they marked Tamil Heritage Month.
*
The occasion was first marked after an unanimous decision in the House of Commons in 2016, passing a resolution to declare the January as Tamil Heritage Month. Since then, January has seen numerous events take place across the country with community leaders and politicians attending and paying tribute to Tamil Canadians.
*
The Toronto District School Board earlier announced that the month would be marked with the theme of “Remembrance. Resilience. Recognition.”

Remembering the waves.
*
On December 26th, 2004, over 35,000 people perished during the catastrophic tsunami that hit the coasts of the North-East and South of the island of Sri Lanka.
*
The United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said five days after the disaster that almost two thirds of those killed across the island were in the Tamil homeland of the North-East.
*
VIllagers in Navalady in Batticaloa wept as they talked of the disaster days later. “My child was clinging to me and screaming ‘father’ ‘father’ right to the end. Fearing that I was going to drown as the force of the water worsened, I released him from my grip hoping he would have a better chance. But I was eventually saved and he was swept away,” cried one villager.
*
“People were screaming though the night after the incident," said another. "Navalady is no longer a village, it is a graveyard full of bodies."
*
Within hours of the waves striking the coastline, the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had issued an urgent appeal for international assistance, declaring the situation as a National Emergency.
*
“It is ironical that this tragedy had befallen on a people who suffered the brutality of a war for two decades and are continuing to exist without realising the basic dividends of peace, normalcy,” said the LTTE, adding “the human disaster and the tragedy the survivors face are unprecedented and need immediate and effective humanitarian intervention.”

*
Mr Balasingham – or Bala Anna as he was fondly known – was deeply adored by the Tamil people. His charismatic addresses drew tens of thousands, as he untangled political analysis with razor sharp wit. His intellectual prowess and political acumen earned him respect from all sides of the negotiating table.
*
He remains an extraordinary theoretician and a formidable figure within the Tamil struggle.

Today marks eleven years since S P Thamilselvan, the head of the political wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was assassinated by the Sri Lankan Air Force.
_____
On November 2nd 2007 Sri Lankan Air Force jets carried out a strike on a residence of members of the LTTEs political division. Five other LTTE officials - Lt Col Anpumani (Alex), Major Mikuthan, Major Neathaaji, Lt Aadchiveal and Lt Maavaikkumaran - were killed alongside Brigadier Thamilselvan.
_____
From our editorial at the time - ‘Both Mr Tamilselvan and Lt Colonel Anpumani (Alex), who was also killed in Fridays airstrike, were friends of this newspaper. From the outset of the Norwegian peace process, concerned that the Tamil people be kept informed of developments, they, along with the LTTEs then Chief Negotiator, Mr Anton Balasingham, went out of their way to ensure we were briefed on the peace process... We will miss them.’

A great gentleman. I have known him since 1994 till the fateful morning. I saw the Kefir roar over the kilinochchi prathesiasabai building and return over The kilinochchi grounds very low going to their Target. At 6:05am I heard two thunderous explosion. Later I was told Thamilchelvam was no more. At his glass cased body there ere no wounds. A small plaster covered his right temple. A great man who fought for Tamil rights was no more. I was at his burial. I hope someday a memorial will be erected in kilinochchi so generations will pay their tribute.

These were the days. Hearing these deaths were ecstatic.. Terrorists who killed tens of thousands of innocent souls being bombarded while hiding like rats in the sewers.

Nice the terrorist is dead

It was right for the international media to condemn and publicize the school children being bombed in Yemen. The same media ignored Tamil school children were targeted by the Sri Lanka Air Force.
