Remembering Mullivaikkaal from Keppapilavu: 10 years Displaced

For nearly two and a half years, the Tamil community of Keppapilavu, Mullaitivu has been protesting to reclaim their lands from military occupation.

The community which was displaced during the last phase of the war in 2009, returned from IDP camps in 2012 to see that their land had been occupied by the Sri Lankan military. Keppapilavu now sits at the centre of one of the most militarised areas in Mullaitivu. According to a report by the Adayaalam Centre for Policy Research and PEARL, the ratio of soldiers to civilians there is 1:2. The community has been harassed by soldiers, the CID and have endured horrid conditions, but continue to protest valiantly to return to their lands.

In this piece, two of the protestors from Keppapilavu speak to the impact of May 2009, the importance of their continuous protest and memorialisation.

If a @uklabour government were to come in to power then @jeremycorbyn reiterated that human rights would be at “the core of our foreign policy”. “We will take up human rights issues with any government and form and frame our trade policy, our arms sales policy and our military training policy around that,” he said. “We have to be assured that any country we’re dealing with has full respect for human rights.”

His comments come after a British navy vessel arrived in Colombo last month and carried out a joint naval exercise with the Sri Lankan military, despite continued concerns of impunity for rights violations committed by Sri Lankan troops. The British government has been criticised for its engagement with the Sri Lankan security forces, which has included Police Scotland training members of Sri Lanka’s notorious Special Task Force (STF).

. @jeremycorbyn says taking Sri Lanka to the International Criminal Court “may well be warranted” in an interview with the @tamilguardian this week.
_____
“I’d say go back to the Human Rights Council, say to the Sri Lankan government - a resolution was carried in 2015, four years ago, very clear in its delineation of what it wants done, very clear in its criticism,” he said. “There has to be a response from the government of Sri Lanka. If the response is simply to reject, then clearly something has to be done in another direction.”
_____
When questioned on referring Sri Lanka to the International Criminal Court (ICC), an option that the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) said “would be fully warranted, Corbyn responded, “Many, many options are open, including the words that the ICJ have used and taking a case there”.

With corridor of time Tamil cause in overseas has to change according to the rapidly changing situation in the homeland. Present conditions of the Tamil people living in homeland has been deteriorating in all aspects of life. First and foremost is the standard of education, results are not that encouraging. Usage of narcotics drugs is a serious menace that is threatening the lives of the youth as organized crimes that is creating fear among the people. Unemployment and identifying suitable vocations pausing serious challenges. Continuing drop in moral standards in teachers, doctors, government servants etc, is a serious concern. Please note youths in the homeland are in a dream world of opportunities in overseas. The above facts is nothing but truth had to be addressed with immediate effect. By the time you guys fight for the rights of Tamils there would be nobody to exercise the hard won rights. Empowering deserving communities is a worthy cause than provoking them inappropriately. Standards of Jaffna University has gone to dogs.

EDITORIAL - Alternative avenues
*
For almost a decade, Tamil victims have looked to the UN Human Rights Council in their pursuit of justice. However, after years of resolutions followed by an extension, alongside lack of any progress on accountability, events at Geneva this week brought another deep disappointment. A day after the Sri Lankan government expressly told the Council it had no intention of creating an accountability mechanism with foreign judges as originally promised, yet another resolution was passed giving Colombo two more years to do just that. Sri Lanka’s foreign minister was blunt. Sri Lanka will not allow an international justice mechanism. The international community can be under no more illusions. If Sri Lanka cannot deliver the justice that victims demand, then other avenues must be explored. Else, as the UN human rights chief herself warned, further violence and instability will follow.

Remembering the waves.
*
On December 26th, 2004, over 35,000 people perished during the catastrophic tsunami that hit the coasts of the North-East and South of the island of Sri Lanka.
*
The United Nation High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said five days after the disaster that almost two thirds of those killed across the island were in the Tamil homeland of the North-East.
*
VIllagers in Navalady in Batticaloa wept as they talked of the disaster days later. “My child was clinging to me and screaming ‘father’ ‘father’ right to the end. Fearing that I was going to drown as the force of the water worsened, I released him from my grip hoping he would have a better chance. But I was eventually saved and he was swept away,” cried one villager.
*
“People were screaming though the night after the incident," said another. "Navalady is no longer a village, it is a graveyard full of bodies."
*
Within hours of the waves striking the coastline, the Liberation Tamil Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had issued an urgent appeal for international assistance, declaring the situation as a National Emergency.
*
“It is ironical that this tragedy had befallen on a people who suffered the brutality of a war for two decades and are continuing to exist without realising the basic dividends of peace, normalcy,” said the LTTE, adding “the human disaster and the tragedy the survivors face are unprecedented and need immediate and effective humanitarian intervention.”
